China has been going through a reformation phase since 2015 regarding visa policies for foreigners living in China. These new policies strengthen supervision regulations and management of foreigners' visa status, and are aimed to better meet applicants' actual needs.

The new policy standardizes the China visa application process, increases various visa types and creates more convenient options for applicants; for instance: fast applications, online visa on arrival at airports and a visa waiver program.

Shanghai has issued some new visa policies since the beginning of 2016, and more policies are on the way to be published in late July. These new policies may not affect those who already have a work visa; however, they may bring some differences or inconvenience for new applicants.

These new policies are listed below:

1. Each applicant must submit all-original documents including his/her working reference letter and university diploma

2. Each employer must be verified before application for employees' work permits

3. Each newly registered company/employer must provide an exact address of its office or work premises

4. More supervision regulations will be applied for those with Business/Tourist Visas who are working in Shanghai

For previous work permit applications in Shanghai, the labor bureau didn't check for original documents, but original work reference letters and university diplomas will be required from now on. Some new applicants who aren't aware of this new policy may need to have these documents sent to China.

Shanghai recently enhanced supervision regulations for expats working in China without work permits. Anyone who is working in China on a business/tourist/student visa may get put on the investigation list.

The work permit will be invalid in 10 days after a employee leaves his/her company. When starting to work for another employer, the employee must have a work permit transfer done. For example, working for company A with a work permit  applied by company B is illegal.

Please pay attention to new policies regarding Chinese visas, and always be aware of your situation.
